As the technological advancements progress, cyber threats become more complex, sophisticated and targeted. Despite the ever-increasing demand to safeguard cybersecurity against cyber threats and attacks, there is still a lack of skilled and qualified personnel in the sector. The cybersecurity workforce shortage and skills gap pose significant concerns and risks regarding global development and security, particularly in the rapid digitalisation of the global economy.
While there have been various efforts and initiatives that aimed to address the issue, the cybersecurity skills gap persists.
ENISA has a long tradition of studies and programmes that attempt to mitigate cybersecurity issues. In an effort to increase the EU’s future cybersecurity workforce and ensure the availability of appropriately trained professionals, ENISA has taken up a variety of initiatives.
In particular, ENISA supports national authorities by developing initiatives such as the Cybersecurity Skills Framework, which provides a clear structure to identify and define key roles and competencies needed in the field. This helps organisations align training and recruitment with actual industry demands. Additionally, ENISA conducts targeted exercises and training programmes to build expertise, enhance practical skills, and strengthen national and cross-border cooperation in cybersecurity.
